First, I tried various ways to get texture by distressing paper—blotting, scraping with sandpaper, palette knife, bamboo pen, xacto blade and more. Then, I added paint both before and after the distressing.
Next, I used the techniques in a painting. I did a rough sketch of this Van Gogh self-portrait, using scraping/embossing/sanding where he used paint strokes for texture. Needless to say, some of these worked better than others, although some of the failures might have worked better on rougher paper.
