Here are some examples of "OWU's" - people painted in three colors.  An "O" for the head, an upside down "U" for the torso, and a "W" for legs. This will make somebody incredibly short and squat, so one must be free to stretch three colors beyond the original concept.

Paint a LOT of them. They will begin to come forth naturally and easily.

You can add shadings and pull back paint to make brighter spots on these little people, too, and make them more real.
