Homework—March 11, 2021—Make it and Break it

This is a copy of a Sisley painting. I love the way the tree breaks the river, the distant land and the hills.

  1. I'm guessing this is Elaine. I like the way the tree departs from its fellows and reaches across the stream, also like its rough irregular shape. Is that really rough paper that it is painted on?

  2. It's cold press, but on the rough end of cold press, I think. Somehow, the photo really caught the bumps on the paper this time.

  3. Maybe your light source was coming at it from 90 degrees.

  4. The rough surface of the paper lets the background be in one world and the foreground in another world that is more defined.

The cleft in the root of the tree makes it realer.
